Electric tongue jack stopped working? Try this simple trick.

It Happened To Us

A while back, we were packing up for a trip—in the rain—and right when it came time to hitch our truck to our trailer, we discovered that our electric tongue jack wouldn’t work. Flipping the switch up and down had no effect. Why don’t these things happen when it’s sunny and warm and clear?

We ended up busting out our manual jack wrench in order to lower the jack down to the point where we could hitch our Airstream to our truck. This worked better—and faster—than expected, although we had to remove our propane tank cover in order to achieve maximum rotational efficiency. With the cover in place we could only turn the wrench about 270° before having to remove it, reposition, and repeat another 270° turn. Once we took the cover off it was full speed ahead and required surprisingly few rotations to get the height where we wanted it. This was a good experience to have but, again, we would have appreciated it more under different circumstances and better weather conditions. Murphy’s law, right?

Anyway, we successfully got hitched up and we were on our way. Later, we called our friends at Airstream of New Mexico and asked for some quick advice. They suggested removing the fuse for the jack and reinserting it. Easy enough, but at first I couldn’t find the fuse. I decided to put it off for another day.

How We Fixed It

First of all, I found this video which shows exactly how to find the fuse for the tongue jack.

Then, I removed our fuse.

Then, I reinserted our fuse.

And then, our jack worked again. 🤯

That’s it. That’s all we had to do and months later the problem has never once reared its ugly head.

What If That Doesn’t Work?

First of all, are you sure your battery isn’t dead? 😬 If your battery is charged and fiddling with the fuse as described above doesn’t fix it, I’m afraid we’re all out of suggestions. You may now close this tab and return to your google search results for further information from another site.

So long!
